A.P. Moller Foundation decided to donate US$45,19 million to the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (the Center).
The Center is a non-profit organisation and funding includes co-financing from strategic partners, government resources, charitable funding, and commercial activities.
This is the second donation, after the US$56,48 million received by the Center as start-up funding when it launched in June 2020.
“The shipping industry has an obligation to act forcefully but the dimension of the challenge calls for collaboration and willingness to take risks in developing a zero-carbon future,” said chairman of the A.P. Moller Foundation Ane Mærsk Mc-Kinney Uggla.
“The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping has quickly developed into a truly important, global collaboration platform and has attracted a strong network of partners that all commit to actively accelerating the transition,” she continued.
“The Center carries the name of my father Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller and these visionary leaders from across the maritime eco system share his feeling of constant care, addressing one of humanity’s most important issues through concrete action,” she added.
“We are humbled and honored by the support and faith shown in the Center by the A.P. Moller Foundation. The two donations of US$101,67 million (DKK 720 million) in total give us the opportunity to continue working as an independent driver of the transition, develop our team and continue accelerating the solutions that are the best for the planet long term,” commented CEO of the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping, Bo Cerup-Simonsen.
Additionally, he pointed out that “the climate does not have time to spare, and we are eager to work with our partners and the entire maritime eco system to ensure that this donation is transferred into real climate action and a greener future for shipping.”
A.P. Moller Foundation will continue to work with the Center on three work programmes focusing on increased adoption of energy efficiency measures in shipping, maturation of alternative marine fuel routes and support to first movers including the creation of green corridors.
