Danish operator A.P. Moller – Maersk has cast doubt over reports from Bloomberg that the company is considering the sale of its reefer container manufacturer, Maersk Container Industry (MCI) for US1 billion.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]Reports from un-named sources in a Bloomberg story suggested that the company was at the early stages of considering the sale of MCI as demand for reefer containers has soared during the Covid-19 pandemic. The sources suggested, however, that the manufacturer may be offered to potential buyers as early as this month.
Asked about the reports, A.P. Moller – Maersk said, “As a company policy we do not comment on rumours and speculation. MCI is delivering strong results, contributing to the growth of A.P. Moller – Maersk. Furthermore, with our shared heritage and connection to shipping and global trade, A.P. Moller – Maersk continues to add value as a good owner of MCI.”
In its Q4 2020 results Maersk reported that, MCI revenues had decreased to US$156 million from US$164 million a year earlier, adding that the decline in income was “driven by delayed collection of produced boxes”. The company added, “The majority of revenue was related to third-party customers. EBITDA increased to US$18 million (US$14 million), mainly due to higher service sales and foreign exchange rates.”
