AD Ports Group, a leading global trade, logistics, and industry facilitator, has announced the launch of The Maritime Sustainability Research Centre, Abu Dhabi (MSRCAD).
This non-profit agency fosters joint research efforts between industry, government, and academia, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation.
The launch event, attended by prominent figures from the government and maritime industry, marked the beginning of the centre’s operations. The centre will be managed by Abu Dhabi Maritime Academy (ADMA), the region’s premier institution for mariner education, under the auspices of Maritime Hub Abu Dhabi. This newly established platform aims to bridge the public and private sectors to bolster Abu Dhabi’s maritime industry.
Situated within ADMA’s facilities, the research centre will primarily seek funding from private sources to support academic institutions and start-ups in conducting both applied and fundamental research. It will also enhance graduate study programs, providing valuable opportunities for aspiring maritime professionals.
The research centre has a broad set of objectives: disseminating knowledge among partners and stakeholders, addressing both short-term and long-term research needs, and offering research opportunities for graduate students. Its key focus areas include Marine Environment & Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence & Robotics, Maritime Cyber Security, Big Data, and Maritime Policies & Laws.

According to a statement, investing in research and development is crucial for the progress of nations, and the MSRCAD is set to play a key role in advancing the UAE’s journey toward prosperity. Data from the OECD and the World Bank shows that leading economies allocate at least 1% of their GDP to research and development, highlighting the significance of these initiatives in fostering innovation and economic growth.
Furthermore, functioning similarly to a funding agency, the MSRCAD will issue calls for proposals, inviting researchers from across the UAE to submit project proposals in targeted fields. This open invitation fosters collaboration and ensures that the Centre remains at the forefront of innovative research in the maritime industry.
