AD Ports Group releases 2023 sustainability report

AD Ports Group has unveiled its 2023 Sustainability Report, showcasing substantial progress in its decarbonisation efforts.

As a listed company on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, the report underscores AD Ports Group’s commitment to transparency and sharing its performance with stakeholders.

The Group’s initiatives align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and support the sustainability objectives set by Abu Dhabi and the UAE, highlighting its key role in the maritime, industrial, and logistics sectors.

“In our determined effort to foster equitable growth and inspired by our leadership’s wise vision, AD Ports Group has taken significant strides in diversifying the UAE’s economy, while adhering to our sustainability commitments. AD Ports Group has achieved significant progress in advancing its sustainability agenda. As we navigate an ever-evolving global landscape, our commitment to Environmental, Social, and Governance principles remains at the core of our strategy,” stated Captain Mohamed Juma Al Shamisi, AD Ports Group Managing Director and CEO.

The report delves into AD Ports Group’s sustainability journey, highlighting partnerships and collaborations aimed at shaping a more sustainable and resilient future. It emphasises the Group’s significant contributions to environmental, social, and economic impacts (ESG).

Key achievements from the report include the successful launch of 124 Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, an 84% employee satisfaction rate, a 57% rise in total employee training hours, and a 42% increase in female workforce representation. Additionally, the Group received several prestigious awards for its ESG efforts, including recognition from the United Nations, the Harvard Business Council, and others.

A standout achievement was the Group’s progress in decarbonisation. In 2023, it reduced the environmental intensity of container port operations through enhanced efficiency, energy savings, and decarbonisation initiatives. Its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission intensity, measured by kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent per TEU, dropped by 2%, from 11.93 kgCO2e per TEU in 2022 to 11.67 kgCO2e per TEU in 2023.

“I salute our teams for their hard work and commitment to advancing AD Ports Group’s sustainability goals; their efforts are clearly reflected in the positive results of our 2023 Sustainability Report. As we continue to grow and expand, AD Ports Group’s experience shows that it is possible to grow sustainably, advancing business and societal goals,” commented Captain Saif Al Mheiri, Abu Dhabi Maritime CEO and Acting Chief Sustainability Officer at AD Ports Group.

These reductions were driven by greater operational efficiency, energy savings at terminals, and increased use of electricity from solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The report also noted a 7% decrease in electricity consumption intensity and a 174% increase in solid waste recycling.

Solar PV installations played a crucial role in reducing 5,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions. Future solar PV projects are planned at Khalifa Port, Zayed Port, AD Ports Group’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, and at a multi-purpose port in Safaga, Egypt, managed under a concession for Egypt’s Red Sea Ports Authority.
