All 21 crew members of the container ship Maersk Tema are safe and well , according to the latest update from Bernard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), after an attempted pirate attack on Friday, off the coast of Africa.
Following the attack off the coast of Guinea-Bissau at 9am local time on 14 February, the company said that the 5,500TEU container ship, built in 2015, is now safely underway with a security escort and that all appropriate maritime authorities have been notified.
BSM confirmed that the vessel it manages, the Maersk Tema, was involved in a security incident about 200 nautical miles off the coast of Guinea-Bissau, West Africa.
The crew were suspicious when the vessel was approached by two skiffs and activated their emergency response procedures, BSM stated. Both the Nigerian and Portuguese Navies attended the vessels request for assistance. Nigerian Marines conducted a full security sweep of the vessel and found no threats on board, according to BSM.
