Antitrust authorities give green light to Spinelli Group share acquisition by Hapag-Lloyd

Following the signing of the agreement in September 2022, the relevant antitrust authorities have approved the acquisition of a 49% share in Spinelli Group by the German container shipping company Hapag-Lloyd.

With the transaction completed today (12 January), Hapag-Lloyd becomes a shareholder in one of Italy’s largest terminal and transport operators. The Spinelli family still owns 51% of the remaining shares in the group.

The two parties have agreed not to disclose any financial information about the deal.

Based on its strategy for 2023, Hapag-Lloyd has steadily increased its presence in the terminal industry, most notably by an agreement to acquire a stake in the terminal business of Chile-based SM SAAM.

Additionally, the German firm also owns holdings in Wilhelmshaven’s JadeWeserPort, Hamburg’s Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA), Tangier’s Terminal TC3, and Damietta, Egypt’s Terminal 2.
