Thanks to a 1,210 m² extension of its solar arrays, APM Terminals Barcelona will be able to generate up to 7.5% of its electricity from the sun in 2023.
In the last year, the terminal’s existing 980 solar panels covering the employee parking lot produced 565,000 kWh of energy – roughly 5.12% of the terminal’s electricity consumption and the equal of powering 160 homes for a year.
APM Terminals said its aim is to decrease greenhouse gas emissions by 70% by 2030 and reach zero overall emissions by 2040.
Furthermore, there are several current actions in support of this goal, including the tendering of a fleet of electrical auxiliary equipment, energy consumption optimisation, the active participation in working groups on sustainability and decarbonisation of the port of Barcelona, and the fact that 100% of electricity purchased by the terminal since 2018 comes from renewable sources.
