Maersk-owned global port and terminal operator APM Terminals (APMT) has announced that its terminal in Peru, APMT Callao, is on pace to reduce its emissions by 36% in 2024, 55% in 2030 and be a zero-emission terminal by 2040.
APMT Callao has proceeded with several decarbonisation initiatives, including the utilisation of renewable energy, improved energy efficiency and equipment electrification.
According to APM Terminals, all of the electricity utilised in its Peruvian business is currently generated using renewable energy, while the company invested half a million US dollars, back in 2021, to replace outdoor lighting fixtures with LED technology, aiming to improve energy efficiency of APMT Callao and achieving to reduce lighting energy usage by 33%.
Additionally, the Peruvian terminal aims to gradually switch its container handling equipment from fossil fuels to 100% electricity.
Jorge Madalengoitia, Asset Management Director of APMT Callao, stated, “At APM Terminals Callao we have been promoting energy efficiency initiatives and the use of renewable energy sources. In doing so we are improving the environment in and around the port, helping promote decarbonisation and setting a benchmark for other ports in the country.”
It is also important to note that in December 2023, APMT Callao announced the launch of construction works on Stage 3A of the Multipurpose North Terminal Modernization Project at the Port of Callao.
Moreover, APM Terminals Callao will be led by a new chief executive officer (CEO) from 1 April, as the current managing director at APM Terminals Spanish Gateways, Carlos Arias, will move to Peru. He will take over for Lars Vang Christensen who is appointed head of Joint Ventures & Strategic Partnerships based in Barcelona, Spain.
