APMT launches US$115 million upgrade project at Nigerian box terminal

APM Terminals marked the inauguration of a major US$115 million upgrade project at the West Africa Container Terminal (WACT) in Onne, Nigeria.

This substantial investment highlights APM Terminals’ strong commitment to Nigeria’s economic development, reinforcing its role as a vital trade hub in West Africa, and underscores the port operator’s position as a key driver of global trade, fostering opportunities for communities across Nigeria and the wider West African region.

During the event, Vice President of Nigeria Kashim Shettima said, “Nigeria is a country of significant opportunities. APM Terminals’ investment in WACT is a clear sign of the company’s strong commitment to developing ports that are a lifeline to global trade.”

He added, “Nigeria will continue collaborating with APM Terminals in the long term to create an environment where businesses participating in global trade can thrive.”

The project reflects APM Terminals’ dedication to improving operational standards, reliability, and local expertise in Nigeria, featuring a comprehensive transformation including yard expansion, cutting-edge equipment, and a modern office complex. New Mobile Harbour Cranes (MHC), Rubber Tyre Gantries (RTG), and advanced Cargo Handling Equipment (CHE) will reduce turnaround times, while an innovative operational model will enhance efficiency across the quay, yard, and gate, setting new service benchmarks.

The investment also includes a cutting-edge auto gate system, an advanced data centre, and upgraded self-service kiosks to improve customer experience and operational performance at WACT.

The inauguration event saw the presence of various dignitaries, including the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, represented by his Senior Adviser (Technical), Professor Babatunde Bolaji Bernard; Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Mr. Adegboyega Oyetola, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Olufemi Oloruntola; Comptroller-General of Customs, Mr. Adewale Adeniyi; Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), represented by Executive Director of Marine and Operations, Engr. Olalekan Badmus; and Managing Director of the Oil & Gas Free Zone Authority (OGFZA), Alhaji Bamanga Usman Jada, among others.
