Asia-Europe container exports increase in June, H1

Container exports from Asia to Europe jumped 11.9% year on year to 1.49 million TEUs in June, which have remained on an upward trend for four months in a row, according to statistics compiled by the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) with data provided by Container Trades Statistics (CTS).

Increases in automobiles, construction machinery and other commodities contributed to the overall growth.

In the first half (January-June), a total of 8.19 million TEUs were traded from Asia to Europe, which swelled 2.3%.

Looking at June’s outbound containers in detail by origin, exports from China and Hong Kong accounted for 6.13 million TEUs, up 3% from Southeast Asia, 1.12 million TEUs, down 7.1%; and from Northeast Asia, 938,611 TEUs, up 10.8%.

By destination, exports to North Europe accounted for five million TEUs, down 4.9% to the eastern Mediterranean, 1.69 million TEUs, up 27.4% and to the western Mediterranean, 1.5 million TEUs, up 5.6%.

Meanwhile, imports from Europe to Asia decreased 7.5% to 3.17 million TEUs in June. From North Europe, 2.25 million TEUs were imported, down 6.6% from the western Mediterranean, 499,370 TEUs, down 8.6% and from the eastern Mediterranean, 419,692 TEUs, down 10.8%.

By destination, 1.54 million TEUs were imported to China, down 11.3% 933,906 TEUs to Southeast Asia, up 7.3% and 688,824 TEUs to Northeast Asia, down 15.1%.
