Asia to Europe container shipments increased by 6.4% from a year earlier, which was a year-on-year improvement for 17 months in a row, due to briskness in furniture, bedding, garments and other consumer goods.

In the first seven months (January-July) of 2024, Asia’s container exports to Europe have reached 10.34 million TEUs.

By origin, 1.24 million TEUs were exported from China and Hong Kong in July, up 9.6%; 213,084 TEUs from Southeast Asia, up 5.4%; and 135,763 TEUs from other parts of Northeast Asia, down 14.8%.

By destination, 984,912 TEUs were destined for North Europe in July, up 5.5%; 305,812 TEUs for the Western Mediterranean, up 13.4%; and 298,729 TEUs for the Eastern Mediterranean, up 3.1%.

Meanwhile, shipments from Europe to Asia shrank 0.6% to 539,331 TEUs in July, suffering their first year-on-year contraction in three months. In the January-July period, in contrast, they have grown marginally by 0.3% to 3.73 million TEUs.

By origin, 367,167 TEUs were imported from North Europe in July, down 4.1%; 91,610 TEUs from the Western Mediterranean, up 3.8%; and 80,554 TEUs from the Eastern Mediterranean, up 12.2%.
