Aspen Institute, Amazon, Patagonia, and Tchibo launch zero emission shipping alliance

Amazon, Patagonia, Tchibo and the Aspen Institute unveiled the establishment of the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA).

The goal of ZEMBA, a non-profit group and initiative of Cargo Owners for Zero Emissions Vessels (coZEV), is to allow companies to obtain zero-emission shipping options that are presently unavailable.

ZEMBA intends to release a Request for Proposal (RfP) in 2023 to forward procure marine transportation services with zero or near-zero lifecycle emissions for all greenhouse gases, not just carbon dioxide. These services are anticipated to be available in 2025 or 2026.

“The Aspen Institute is inspired by industry leaders like Amazon, Patagonia, and Tchibo who are advancing solutions that will help us achieve full maritime decarbonisation,” said Dan Porterfield, president and CEO of the Aspen Institute.

He went on to point out, “Through ZEMBA, we look forward to partnering with additional freight buyers to catalyse the maritime industry’s clean energy future.”

In addition to enabling ZEMBA, the Aspen Institute coordinates the coZEV 2040 Ambition Statement, in which 19 global companies have declared their intention to use only zero-emission transportation for ocean freight by 2040.
