The port authorities of Barcelona and Busan have promoted a joint project to develop a new logistics centre in Barcelona.
The two parts have signed a cooperation agreement on 22 September, which establishes the participation of each of the parties in the joint venture as well as the operational direction of the logistics centre.
The Spanish and South Korean ports will create a joint venture which will be responsible for the management and operating processes of the logistics centre.
The president of the Busan Port Authority, Ki-chan NAM said that this project is very important, since it is the first cooperative initiative promoted by the two port authorities.
A study on the logistics market of the Catalan capital has been carried out by the two ports, amidst the Covid-19 pandemic period, which includes maritime traffic between the two port areas, as well as the current status of exporting and importing companies.
In order to explain and promote this project, the ports of Barcelona and Busan have held an online seminar on 23 September in which around 70 Korean companies have participated. The seminar had the support of the ministry of oceans and fisheries of South Korea and the ACCIÓ (the agency set up by the Catalan Government, Generalitat de Catalunya, for the Competitiveness of Businesses) office in the Asian country.
The president of the Port of Barcelona, Mercè Conesa, explained during her speech at the seminar that the implementation of this project will revitalize the logistics flows between Northeast Asia and southern Europe through the two ports and will help the distribution of products Koreans in Europe and potentially North Africa very competitively.
