Port of New York and New Jersey cargo volumes set new October record, surpassing previous best October by 1.2 percent
PATH ridership sets October record handling more than 296,000 weekday riders;
Tunnel and bridge volumes continued to grow during October 2019, handling a 1.6 percent more vehicles year-to-date than during the same period in 2018, continuing steady climb experienced over the past five years
Continuing its record-setting pace across all Port Authority transportation facilities in 2019, the agency announced today that its airports, seaport, PATH, and Goethals Bridge reported record passenger and cargo volumes during October 2019. The record volumes come at a time when the Port Authority is making unprecedented investments in its facilities to bring the agency’s vital facilities up to 21st century standards and to improve the traveling public’s experience.
Port of New York and New Jersey:
The Port of New York and New Jersey set a record in October 2019, handling 666,381 TEUs (20-foot equivalent units), a 1.2 percent increase over the previous October record of 658,708 TEUs set in 2018. The October 2019 numbers also represent the third largest cargo volume handled in any month in the history of the port. The Port Authority’s ExpressRail system also set an October record, handling 57,722 containers, an increase of about 1 percent over the 57,197 containers handled during the previous October record month in 2018. Through the first 10 months of 2019, the Port handled 6,286,762 TEUs, a new record for the 10-month period. The volume was 5 percent above the previous record for the 10-month period set in 2018.
PATH
In October, PATH equaled its previous monthly record set in 2018, handling an average of 296,976 weekday passengers during the month. There were nine weekdays in October where PATH ridership exceeded 300,000 passengers, peaking at 308,725 passengers handled on October 24. From January through October, PATH handled a record average weekday ridership of 286,520 passengers, up 1.5 percent over the same period in 2018, and an overall ridership of 69.24 million passengers.
Tunnels, Bridges, and Terminals:
In October, the Goethals Bridge established a new October monthly record, handling 1,493,303 eastbound vehicles, a 1 percent increase over the previous record set in 2018. The Staten Island Bridges collectively also set a new monthly record in October, reporting 3,089,411 vehicles, a 2.7 percent increase over the previous record set in 2018. This record volume was driven by record activity at the Goethals Bridge and the resumption of normal weekend traffic at the Bayonne Bridge following the conclusion of weekend closures tied to the wind-down of the Bayonne Bridge Navigational Clearance Project. From January through October, the agency’s six bistate crossings – the Holland and Lincoln Tunnels, the George Washington Bridge, Bayonne Bridge, Goethals Bridge and Outerbridge Crossing – saw a 1.6 percent increase in traffic compared to 2018, or 1,622,000 more vehicles during that 10-month period.
