BMF Port Burgas has started construction on the first deep-water container vessel berth in Bulgaria. The protocol for “Construction of quay wall for berth 28, technological infrastructure and facilities” was signed on 23 February by the Municipality of Burgas.
The construction is part of the project “Raising low-Emissions multimodal transport in the core port of Burgas with new Infrastructures for BERTH28 (REBIRTH28)”, which is co-financed under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport programme.
The new berth will be built to accommodate the latest generation of container vessels, with cutting-edge amenities and first-rate services.
BMF Port Burgas stated that with the new quay, it will be able to receive boxships that cannot be berthed elsewhere in Bulgaria, and will also take the first steps towards implementing shore-side power supply options at the port.
“With this expansion, we aim to strengthen our position as a leading container port in the Black Sea region and offer better connectivity for businesses looking to import or export goods. We also aim to reduce our carbon footprint and promote environmentally friendly handling and transportation of goods,” said BMF Port Burgas in a statement.
“This expansion will also lead to an increase in cargo transport opportunities, which in term leads to increasing possibilities for the international corridors passing through BMF Port Burgas, such as Orient/East-Med Corridor, TRACECA Corridor, and TITR Middle Corridor,” it added.
