BMSB: Mandatory requirements for imports

The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has released the latest requirements regarding mandatory pre-shipment fumigation for imports into New Zealand, to protect against Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs over the 2018/2019 high risk season.

If you’re importing break-bulk (not in a container) or containerized sea cargo from certain countries, you must meet certain MPI requirements to manage the risk of brown marmorated stink bugs (BMSB) getting into New Zealand. MPI has changed the list of countries that need to meet these requirements in Schedule 3 of the new IHS issued on 9 August 2018 to:

  • Austria
  • Bulgaria
  • France
  • Georgia
  • Germany
  • Greece
  • Hungary
  • Italy
  • Liechtenstein
  • Romania
  • Russia
  • Serbia
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • Switzerland
  • USA

Please visit https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/other/vehicles-and-machinery/requirements/brown-marmorated-stink-bug-requirements for more information and to familiarise yourself with the requirements. Consignees are responsible for ensuring their shipments are compliant with the regulations.

These measures are effective from 1 September 2018 to 30 April 2019.
