Briese takes additional feeder ships at Chinese yard

German tonnage provider Briese Schiffahrts has exercised options for two more 1,800TEU ships at China’s Huanghai Shipbuilding.

The additional orders come after Briese contracted four similar ships at Huanghai in June.

The price was not disclosed but similar-sized newbuildings are now valued at around US$28 million.

All the ships ordered at Huanghai would be delivered from late 2023 to early 2024.

In April, Briese also commissioned four 1,930TEU ships at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding, for delivery in late 2023, marking its first newbuilding order.

Huanghai is nearly 80% owned by its workers’ union, with the minority stake held by an investment company controlled by the municipal government of Rongcheng in Shandong province.

Briese owns nine feeder boxships, all purchased second-hand. Charterers of Briese’s vessels include the company’s affiliate BBC Chartering, Taiwanese intra-Asia carrier TS Lines and French operator CMA CGM.
