Canada launches Green Shipping Corridor initiative

Canada’s Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez announced the development of the Green Shipping Corridor initiative, a US$165 million investment.

“With the new Green Shipping Corridor Program, Canada is taking another step towards meeting its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050. We can work together to establish green shipping corridors to decarbonise the marine sector along the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, as well as Canada’s east and west coasts,” stated Rodriguez.

Green shipping corridors will be established and the maritime sector will be decarbonised in important shipping regions around the Great Lakes, the St. Lawrence Seaway, and Canada’s east and west coasts.

“The Government of Canada is making smart investments to ensure that our critically important supply chains – the economic links that ensure affordable goods and products are delivered to market and Canadians – are as sustainable and competitive as possible. Today’s investment is key to accelerating the uptake of clean technologies, fuels and or energy sources, here in British Columbia and across the country,” said Jonathan Wilkinson, Canada’s Minister of Energy and Natural Resources.

The initiative will be provided through the following two funding sources, both of which will help to lower Canada’s pollution in the maritime sector and develop green shipping routes that assure clean and reliable shipping:

The Clean Ports stream will offer funds to assist the adoption of clean technology and infrastructure at ports and terminals, while the Clean Vessel Demonstration stream will fund research, testing, and piloting of clean fuel propulsion systems for shipping vessels.

Applications for financing under the two streams will be accepted on Transport Canada’s website from 1 December. This initiative will fund the implementation of new maritime projects to keep Canada’s economy expanding, guarantee commodities reach Canadians, and improve the environment.
