Cargo ship suffers fire in Yemen

A general cargo ship carrying food items burst into flames in Yemen’s Aden port on 11 April.

The ship, which was on its way to Somalia’s Berbera port, was manned by seven Indian seafarers, who were all rescued by firefighters. Gulf of Aden Ports Corporation officials believe that the fire started in the ship’s engine room on the night of 11 April, but the cause is still unknown.

Yemeni media reported that the ship’s name is Joshi Samdani and is of Indian origin, although the vessel could not be traced from international ship databases.

Five of the seafarers were injured and had to be sent to a local hospital for treatment.

Yemeni news outlet Debriefer quoted witnesses as saying that columns of black smoke were seen from a distance over the port in Tawahi district, as the fire erupted in the ship, before firefighting teams brought the fire under control.
