Cargotec and SSAB collaborate to develop fossil-free steel for cargo handling industry

Cargotec and the steel company SSAB will partner on the introduction of fossil-free steel to the cargo handling industry.

“Close collaboration with the development of a fossil-free value chain means we contribute to strengthening our customers’ competitiveness and to reducing their carbon footprint,” stated Martin Lindqvist, President and CEO of SSAB.

CEO of the cargo handling equipment company Cargotec, Mika Vehviläinen also said that this is an important step towards the company’s vision of becoming a leader in sustainable cargo flow.

Fossil-free steel has significantly a lower environmental impact than carbon dioxide and, therefore, contributes towards a more sustainable value chain.

It has been estimated that steel demand will increase in the future and hence, meeting this demand requires development and usage of fossil-free steel alternatives, noted Cargotec in its announcement.
