The overall container volume of major Chinese ports rose 4.7% in 2022, compared with 2021 box volume, reaching 295.9 million TEUs.
Additionally, the overall cargo volume of the Chinese ports climbed to 15.685 billion tons in the previous year, translating to a year-on-year increase of 0.9%.
The following chart shows the cargo throughput and container throughput data of the twelve major ports in China.
As seen in the table, the port of Shanghai has maintained its dominance, being the busiest container port in the country with 47.3 million TEUs.
The port of Ningbo & Zhoushan is the second busiest box port in China with 33.35 million TEUs, achieving a noteworthy year-on-year growth of 7.8%. In the third place, we find the port of Shenzhen with 30.04 million TEUs, translating to a year-on-year increase of 2.3%.
Meanwhile, the largest percentage growths were registered at the ports of Dalian, Beibu Gulf and Rizao. Dalian reported year-on-year box growth of 21.5%, Beibu Gulf achieved a 16.8% container increase and Rizao saw its TEU volumes rise 12.1%.
On the other hand, Yinkou was the only port that reported a year-on-year decline in 2022 container volumes, handling 5 million TEUs, translating to a 4% drop.
