China to US containers plunge in February

Container exports to the United States from 10 major countries and regions in Asia fell 9.4% year on year to 1,119,485TEU in February, US research company Descartes Datamyne unveiled recently.

The negative growth was made by sluggishness in container movement during the Lunar New Year holidays and under the influence of the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

By country/region of origin, containers from China plunged 20.8% to 578,123TEU, suffering a year-on-year decrease for 13 months in a row, according to Automated Commercial Environment (ACE) and bill-of-lading (B/L) data provided by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Ranked second were those from South Korea, which improved 4.5% to 137,743TEU. Finishing in third place, exports from Vietnam surged 33.4% to 95,316TEU, but those from Taiwan declined 9.4% to 68,789TEU, coming in fourth.

Containers from Singapore were also brisk, soaring 24.5% to 63,445TEU. Containers from India jumped 30.5% to 43,088TEU. Hong Kong, saw shipments to the US diminish 20.6% to 43,067TEU. Exports from Japan contracted 8.5% to 39,664TEU.
