Chinese ports achieve 7% box growth; Shanghai remains world’s busiest container port

In 2021, the container throughput of Chinese ports was 282.7 million TEU, which translates to a year-on-year increase of 7%, while the cargo volume was 15,545.3 million tons, marking a year-on-year growth of 6.8%.

The following chart presents the cargo throughput and container throughput data of the twelve major ports in China.

According to the Chinese government’s data, the Beibu Gulf port has achieved the highest percentage container increase (19%), followed by Tianjin port (10.4%) and Ningbo & Zhoushan (8.2%).

Meanwhile, the Port of Shanghai remains the busiest box port in the world and the country, handling more than 47 million TEU in 2021, with Ningbo Zhoushan and Shenzhen ports following with 31.08 million TEU and 28.77 million TEU, respectively.
