A dockworker died at Chittagong port after falling from 12-metre high inside a vessel during container loading operations on 27 April. The port employee was on top of a box, while he was working on the Cyprus-flagged 2,190 TEU vessel Cape Syros.
Amin Ullah, 50, succumbed to his injuries approximately an hour after being taken to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital, according to Mohammad Omar Faruk, Chittagong port spokesperson.
Every year there are workers that lose their lives at Chittagong port in the absence of adequate workplace safety arrangements.
In February this year, Sifat Rabby, 28, a junior outdoor assistant of Chittagong port, was killed being crushed under the wheels of a crane while on duty. On 1 July 2021, Md Ramjan, 32, another dock worker, died after falling from a vessel in jetty number 9 at the port.
There is an increasing number of reported dockworker incidents in the last few days, as we have seen two fatal accidents in New Zealand at the ports of Auckland and Lyttelton and another serious injury of a port worker in Piraeus, Greece.
