The Chittagong port is going to receive equipment worth US$125 million this year to enhance its container handling capabilities.
The new machines, including cranes, reach stackers and straddle carriers, are expected to increase the handling capacity of the major Bangladeshi port from 3 to 4 million TEU.
Chittagong Port Authority chairman, Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said the order is placed for 25 pieces of equipment this year, which will arrive at the port by December or January, while additional port equipment is also expected to be available next year to enrich the port’s capacity.
The Chittagong port has plans to receive 4 Quay Gantry Cranes, 11 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes, 4 Reach Stackers, 41 Mobile Harbour Cranes, 2 Container Movers, 4 Forklift Trucks and 21 High Straddle Carriers by phases.
Currently, the port has a total of 14 Quay Gantry Cranes, 3 Mobile Harbour Cranes, 41 Rubber Tyred Gantry Cranes, 1 Rail Mounted Yard Gantry Crane and 36 Straddle Carriers.
