ClassNK and Lovoy join forces to enhance safety management systems

ClassNK and Lovoy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development and implementation of Safety Management Systems (SMS) aimed at enhancing user-friendliness.

Lovoy emphasizes the need for SMS to prioritize the end user, particularly seafarers, highlighting that overly complex procedures can lead to errors. With evolving industry requirements and the introduction of new elements like LNG fuel, the importance of user-friendly SMS design becomes increasingly critical.

“To support the shipping stakeholders’ ongoing and steadfast pursuit of safety, ClassNK is committed to examining every possible approach to ensure elevated safety standards. I am pleased to join hands with Lovoy in exploring potential and measures that will contribute to this endeavour,” stated Captain Naoki Saito, general manager of the Maritime Training and Education Department, ClassNK.

ClassNK, having conducted SMS audits for 6,000 vessels and 800 firms, focuses on ensuring compliance with regulations. Additionally, the organization provides valuable insights and tools to improve safety practices.

Both parties have acknowledged that overly intricate SMSs present not only challenges but also avenues for enhancement. Through the signing of this MOU, the two entities will collaborate to bolster and advance maritime safety.

“Quality is not a quick fix – it’s about making lasting change. ClassNK is a world leader in quality management. Together, ClassNK and Lovoy will make lasting change by training companies to permanently stop their people from putting unnecessary complexity into their SMSs,” explained Captain Terje Lovoy, Senior Partner, Lovoy.
