ClassNK releases updated ‘Alternative Fuels Insight’ report

ClassNK has released Version 2.0 of its report, ‘ClassNK Alternative Fuels Insight,’ which was originally published in May 2024.

This updated version includes the latest data on alternative fuel ships, encompassing orders, deliveries, demand projections, and cost simulations specifically for ammonia-fueled vessels. The report is designed to assist customers in making informed decisions regarding future fuel options and investments.

According to ClassNK, given the diverse range of alternative fuels available for ships, it is crucial to consider both technical evaluations and broader trends, such as costs and supply availability, to make appropriate fuel choices. ‘ClassNK Alternative Fuels Insight’ offers insights into the latest trends for each alternative fuel option.

The newly updated Version 2.0 includes information on the projected demand for alternative fuels, as estimated by ClassNK based on scheduled deliveries of alternative fuel ships.

It also features cost simulations for ammonia-fueled ships, which are anticipated to see increased orders in the future.

Additionally, the report covers trends in green methane production projects for LNG-fueled ships, assesses the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of biofuels as an effective GHG reduction strategy for conventional fuel ships, and details ClassNK’s support for onboard carbon capture systems (CCS), which are expected to become more prevalent.

Furthermore, the report includes the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) rating results for ships verified by ClassNK, with data categorized by ship type and size.
