CMA CGM adjusts PSS and THCs

Eastbound spot rates out of Europe remain at more than double the levels of a year ago and CMA CGM is looking to benefit from the elevated prices by adding a peak season surcharge (PSS), the French carrier has announced this week.

The Feightos FBX index, which monitors spot rates, show that rates from the Mediterranean to the Far East were at US$943/FEU on 24 July this year, substantially up from the US$438/FEU on 26 July last year.

A PSS will be added to cargo originating at West and East Mediterranean ports, including Adriatic and Black Sea ports, for destinations to the Far East, Middle East and the Red Sea and it will be applied from 1 August, until further notice.

This PSS will apply as follows:

  • Cargo: Dry
  • Amount: US$100 per 20′ dry / 40′ dry /40′ HC

However, reefer cargo from Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Poland and the Baltic, as well as the West Mediterranean and Adriatic headed for the Indian Subcontinent, Middle East and Red Sea, which was subject to a US$200/reefer surcharge from 1 July, will see this charge cancelled with effect from 1 August.

In Turkey the carrier will add terminal handling charges at the ports of Izmir, Aliaga and Samsun for all cargo handled from the 20 August.

The charges will be as follows:

Port & Direction THC levels in USD per container dry
Izmir Export 290
Izmir Import 350
Aliaga Export 290
Aliaga Import 350
Samsun Import 350
