CMA CGM and Nike forge agreement for sustainable shipping solutions

Nike, a global leader in the apparel and sportswear sector, has recently forged an agreement with French ocean carrier CMA CGM to purchase eco-friendly biofuel for a part of its maritime shipping needs. This strategic move signifies a significant step towards decarbonizing Nike’s supply chain.

Beginning 1 July 2023, until 31 May 2024, Nike plans to utilize sustainable biofuel for transporting 36% of its cargo with CMA CGM. By undertaking this initiative, Nike aims to mitigate its CO2 emissions by 25,000 tons, marking a substantial leap towards fostering more environmentally sustainable practices.

“We are thrilled to announce a collaboration with Nike to reduce the carbon footprint of their maritime transport. This initiative seamlessly aligns with the CMA CGM Group’s comprehensive strategy for decarbonization, working towards achieving Net Zero by 2050 and supporting our clients in decarbonizing their supply chain. It marks valuable progress in the commitment of both companies towards sustainability,” stated a CMA CGM spokesperson.

In pursuit of achieving Net Zero by 2050, the CMA CGM Group is dedicated to assisting its clientele in the decarbonization of their supply chains through the ACT WITH CMA CGM+ suite of low-carbon solutions.

Introduced in 2020, this initiative empowers CMA CGM’s clients to assess their ecological impact, diminish carbon emissions by adopting low-carbon alternative energies like biofuel, LNG, and biomethane, and offset any remaining emissions through environmental projects.

“Collaborating with a key player like Nike and taking this major step towards decarbonization is an important achievement. We are confident that our success will act as a catalyst, encouraging other carriers and customers to join us on this path to accelerate the transition towards a Net Zero industry,” said Olivier NIVOIX, executive vice president of CMA CGM Group Lines.
