French operator CMA CGM aims to be carbon neutral by 2050, according to Rodolphe Saadé, the chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group.
Speaking at the United Nations Global Compact online conference, on 2 June, Saadé announced new steps to define the shipping and logistics of the future, while he recalled its company’s commitment for a more balanced globalisation, “which contributes to economic and social development, whilst respecting humanity and protecting the planet.”
Apart from the 2050 carbon neutral objective, another important element of his speech was the announcement that CMA CGM’s energy supplies will include 10% alternative fuels by 2023.
“This is a new step for our Group, which is on track to reduce its CO2 emissions by 40% per tonne kilometre by 2030, a target set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO),” the French carrier stated.
Rodolphe Saadé also said, “In 2019, we reduced our total CO2 emissions by 6% thanks to our mobilisation, technological innovations implemented and an improved management of vessel operations.”
This year will also see the launching of the new 23,000TEU LNG-powered vessels, confirming CMA CGM’s ambition for the energy transition of the shipping industry.
This is a worldwide premiere, according to CMA CGM, resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions around 20%, and the suppression of almost all Sulphur and fine particle emissions.
