CMA CGM enters air freight market

In a sign that major shipping lines are following Maersk’s lead in aiming to transform themselves from port to port operators to integrators, CMA CGM has announced it is expanding its operations with a new air freight division.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The French carrier has created its new specialised air sector, named CMA CGM AIR CARGO, which it believes will strengthen its transport and logistics business.

“This division will launch with four Airbus A330-200F aircraft and will leverage commercial partnerships with airlines in order to deliver global coverage,” said Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group.

CMA CGM Group will buy four 60-tonne-playload Airbus A330-200F freighter aircraft, which came into service between 2014 and 2016. With a range of 4,000 nautical miles, they will connect Europe with the rest of the world, while CMA CGM will entrust the operation of its freighter fleet to an, as yet undisclosed European airline.

CMA CGM AIR CARGO represents a major new component of the Marseille-based shipping and logistics group in both operational and commercial terms, according to a company statement.
