CMA CGM introduces an eco-friendly solutions array

The CMA CGM Group has announced the launch of ACT with CMA CGM+, a combination of solutions helping its customers improve their environmental footprint and make their cargo carbon neutral.

Available throughout all the company’s shipping subsidiaries and in all the markets CMA CGM Group serves, this new offering consists of four services and, according to a statement, “enables its customers to analyse their environmental footprint, use cleaner alternative energy sources and to offset the emissions generated during the transport of their goods.”

CLEANER ENERGY LNG and CLEANER ENERGY BIOFUEL are two of the four solutions, which will support delivering reductions in environmental footprint.

The French shipping group decided to power 26 of its containerships using liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2022, and seven of these have already been deployed on services. CLEANER ENERGY LNG will allow customers to choose to transport their goods using LNG, a technology that helps to preserve air quality by eliminating many atmospheric pollutants. “Through its greater energy efficiency and the use of renewable biomethane sources, this offering also delivers a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions,” added CMA CGM in its announcement.

In addition, CLEANER ENERGY BIOFUEL will give the group’s customers the chance to opt for a transport solution for their goods using biofuel generated from used cooking oil, as CMA CGM was the first shipping group to successfully use biofuel on its container vessels.

These alternative fuel-based solutions can unlock reductions in greenhouse gas emissions of between 15% and 85%, according to the announcement.

The Marseille-based carrier has also presented ECO MONITOR and POSITIVE OFFSET, two solutions for analysing and offsetting environmental footprints. ECO MONITOR, which will be rolled out from 2021, will allow CGM Group’s customers to keep track of their environmental footprint in real time and take action more easily using this data.

Furthermore, with POSITIVE OFFSET, the company’s customers can offset their emissions by contributing to Gold Standard carbon sequestration projects involving local communities.

“We have made ground-breaking decisions advancing the shift to cleaner energy and helping push the whole industry forward. Through ACT with CMA CGM+, we are sharing our energy transition solutions for shipping and providing our customers with effective solutions,” commented Marc Bourdon, senior vice president at CMA CGM Group’s commercial and agencies networks.
