CMA CGM will take over the operation and management of the upcoming multipurpose terminal, Pier 55, at the Port of Alexandria, which is expected to commence operations in the next year.
[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The chairman and CEO of the French shipping group, Rodolphe Saadé visited Egypt to close the deal with the national authorities, which includes the development of logistics solutions, digitalisation, the contribution to the training of younger generations in maritime and logistics, as well as other investments.
The Egyptian authorities have confirmed their intention to enter into a long-term partnership with CMA CGM, according to the carrier’s announcement.
The terminal, which covers an area of 560,000m² with quays of over 2km in length, will have a capacity of around 1,5 million TEU and will facilitate the deployment of CMA CGM’s larger vessels.
In Egypt, the French carrier currently employs almost 300 people and calls at six ports, linking the country to the rest of the world, while each year, CMA CGM’s vessels navigate the Suez Canal more than 700 times.
CMA CGM believes that with the control of Pier 55 in Alexandria it will strengthen its strategic positioning and expertise as a container terminal operator in the Mediterranean with terminal capacities of almost 7 million TEU including Marseilles-Fos, Seville, Malta, Thessaloniki in Greece, and Latakia in Syria.
In the meantime, CMA CGM Group will deploy its LNG-powered vessels on its Asia-Med network by the end of 2021. As part of his strategic vision, Rodolphe Saadé has decided to choose Marseille-Fos to bunker these new LNG vessels, making the Mediterranean a major area for the development of the use of LNG.[/s2If]
