Construction works begin on new port experience center in Rotterdam

The Port of Rotterdam Authority announced on 5 June that its new port experience centre has been named Portlantis. On the same date, the authority celebrated the official launch of the centre’s construction.

More specifically, this took place on the construction site near the Maasvlakte 2 bathing beach at the end of Prinses Amaliahaven.

The centre is expected to be ready at the end of the next year, and will succeed the FutureLand information centre offering a broader and richer range of activities.

Dutch general contractor G. van der Ven B.V. Aannemingsbedrijf has started the Portlantis construction, while the building was designed by architects from MVRDV, a Rotterdam-based agency.

“It will be an inspiring, unique interactive exposition and a meeting point in the heart of the port. For most visitors, the route to the centre passes through over 40 kilometres of port. They’ll already have had an impressive experience by the time they arrive,” commented Allard Castelein, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority.

Pictured are pupils from St Leonardus School in Brielle, married couple Jo and Pien Verburg, Marco Tak (Shipagents) and Bas Janssen (Deltalinqs) together with the general management of the Port of Rotterdam Authority (Allard Castelein, Vivienne de Leeuw and Boudewijn Siemons). Together, they unveiled the name of the new port experience centre.
