Container throughput decreases at Tokyo Port

In October 2023, the Port of Tokyo witnessed a decrease of 10.3% in foreign-trade container handling, with a total of 352,680 TEUs.

According to JIFFA, loaded export containers amounted to 88,744 TEUs (down 4.8%), and empty export containers were 82,048 TEUs (down 11.7%). Imports comprised 175,246 TEUs of loaded containers (down 9.7%) and 6,642 TEUs of empty containers (down 47.9%).

Also, containers transported to and from other domestic ports recorded 20,529 TEUs for loaded containers (down 4.8%) and 22,086 TEUs for empties (down 7.9%). The overall figures reveal 284,519 TEUs for loaded containers (down 7.9%) and 110,776 TEUs for empties (down 14.6%).

Analyzing the January-October period, loaded containers totalled 2.52 million TEUs (down 7.2%), and unloaded containers were 856,339 TEUs (down 13%). Exported loaded containers were 735,455 TEUs (down 1.5%), while unloaded containers reached 821,955 TEUs (down 14.1%). Import-wise, 1.79 million TEUs were laden (down 9.3%), and 34,384 TEUs were empty (up 28.2%).

In terms of domestic containers, 190,478 TEUs were loaded (down 2.4%), and 218,538 TEUs were unloaded (down 2.4%). Overall, laden containers amounted to 2.71 million TEUs (down 6.9%), and empty containers totalled 1.07 million TEUs (down 11%).
