Container traffic increases at NWSA terminals

North West Seaport Alliance (NWSA) reported increased vessel activity and intermodal volume, combined with diverted cargo, resulting in robust box traffic at the US gateway.

Full international imports in August reached their highest level for the month since 2010, with a 49.4% rise compared to August 2023. Full international exports also grew by 18.5%, surpassing the five-year average for August. Overall international volumes saw a 45.6% increase compared to August 2023.

NWSA’s total container volumes hit 315,739 TEUs in August, marking a year-on-year 30.1% growth. For the year-to-date, volumes are up 14.1% from last year, reaching 2,137,902 TEUs with full imports having increased by 22.7% and full exports by 14%.

Earlier this month, the 16,592 TEU Maersk Alette made a call at Husky Terminal in the Tacoma (South) Harbor, setting a record as the largest container vessel to dock at the terminal. It is also the first dual-fuel vessel capable of operating on green methanol to visit the gateway.

Additionally, breakbulk volume fell by 3.8%, totalling 298,394 metric tons year-to-date, while auto volumes reached 237,713 units, translating to an increase of 10.2%.
