Container volumes in China reach record levels

Combined volume of containerised shipments handled at ports in China increased 4.4% from the previous year to a record high of 261.07 million TEU in 2019, according to data compiled by the nation’s Ministry of Transport (MOT). Throughput was favorable at both coastal and inland river ports, increasing 3.9% to 230.92 million TEU and 8.5% to 30.15 million TEU, respectively.

The lineup of the top 10 coastal ports remained unchanged from 2018. Containers to and from Shanghai climbed 3.1% to a new yearly record of 43.3 million TEU, helping the port enjoy the largest market share. As for others, meanwhile, remarkable improvements were made at Qingdao, up 8.8%, and Tianjin, up 8.1%. On the other hand, containers to and from Dalian and Yingkou both plunged, falling 10.3% and 15.6%, respectively.
