Container volumes drop at Germany’s major box port

The duisport Group said its container throughput declined by 7% to approximately 4 million TEUs in the financial year 2022.

In the same period, the duisport Group handled 54.9 million tonnes of goods via ship, rail, and truck. Total traffic in all Duisburg ports (including private works ports) dropped by 5.7% in 2022 to 104.9 million metric tonnes.

Amid the challenging market conditions, the German port reported Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) of US$46 million and Earnings Before Interest and Taxes (EBIT) of US$24.4 million. Both figures are back to previous years’ levels.

Despite the critical availability of materials and suppliers, as well as the sharp rise in purchasing prices, the duisport Group spent around US$60.5 million in the previous fiscal year on investments in property, plant and equipment, financial investments, and maintenance measures to further strengthen its infrastructure and superstructure.
