Container volumes slip at Port of Montreal in May

Container volumes dipped from May 2023 levels at the Port of Montreal, according to the latest results of the Canadian port.

Container traffic at the port totaled 132,380 TEUs in May, down 3.7% from the same month in 2023, while on a year-to-date basis, container traffic was 2.1% down.

Of May’s total, 115,043 TEUs were loaded containers while 17,337 TEUs consisted of empty boxes. Import volumes were down 4.6%, while export volumes slipped 2.8%.

The port counted 28 container vessels coming to the port in May, with 143 vessels having arrived at the port since the start of the year. In comparison, the port reported 34 vessels in May 2023, with 150 vessels counted from January to May 2023.

The total container volumes represent volumes from Montreal’s five container terminals: Cast, Racine, Maisonneuve, Viau and Bickerdike.

The port, operated by the Montreal Port Authority, considers itself the largest container port in Eastern Canada, handling containerized and non-containerized cargo, liquid bulk and dry bulk. The port is also the only container port in the Quebec province.
