Daikin Active CA offers carriers new markets

Reefer climate control specialist Daikin has partnered with a three major carriers to successfully transport a number of sensitive reefer cargoes using what it calls its precision climate control system.

According to Daikin the system successfully transported lettuce, guava, custard apples and snow peas, which all require temperature to be controlled within a narrow band to ensure the cargo remains fresh and arrives in good condition.

The Daikin system uses Active CA container technology which uses nitrogen to reduce oxygen levels within a reefer container and the positive pressure created means that outside air cannot enter the box and damage the cargo. This system allowed the successful transportation of a range of cargoes in recent shipments.

Daikin, which is headquartered in Japan, said, “In CA optimal mode, low oxygen and carbon dioxide settings of 2% to 3% are initiated to deliver precise management of conditions inside the reefer containers. This unique technological advantage of Daikin’s Active CA actively helps shippers expand their cargo ranges and reach new markets.”

According to Daikin its Active CA system is easily installed onto all types of reefer boxes, and, with the higher pressure inside the box than outside even older boxes with faulty seals will not allow outside air to penetrate the box.

Daikin added, “Vegetables require more humidity in transit than fruit: lettuce, in particular, can develop brown spots during transit if the correct transportation conditions aren’t present.”

By adding nitrogen gas into the reefer container vital moisture is also added and this reduces the respiration of the cargo, rapidly reducing oxygen concentration.

The system has been used by CMA CGM, Ocean Network Express and Yang Ming Lines.
