On 20 June, Greek container vessel owner Danaos entered into contracts for the construction of two 8,258 TEU boxships.
The new vessels will have the latest eco-design characteristics and are expected to be delivered in 2026. Yangzijiang Shipbuilding in China seems to have received the order for the construction of the two ships.
CEO of Danaos, Dr. John Coustas commented, “We have expanded our newbuilding programme with the order of four additional newbuilding vessels. These vessels, two of which are 6,000 TEU and two of which are 8,200 TEU, will be delivered methanol-ready, ensuring the longevity of our investment.”
The company’s current fleet of 68 container ships aggregating 421,293 TEUs and 10 under-construction vessels aggregating 74,914 TEUs ranks Danaos among the largest container ship charter owners in the world based on total TEU capacity.
“All of these [newbuilding vessels] will be able to utilise alternative fuels. Importantly, six of these vessels are already chartered for multi-year periods beginning on their delivery dates in 2024,” pointed out Coustas.
