Digital opportunity to boost the industry

More and more technologies have lately been introduced in shipping industry. Most of the companies are trying to follow the innovations and find a way to take advantages from the power of technology.

Blockchain technology, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and many more innovations are going to change the world of shipping. As digitalization is coming more and more closely, everyone must be ready to readjust to new situations in order to receive the expected benefits.

Lower costs, faster services, increased safety and security and real-time information are some of the advantages, digital shipping can offer. Both, shippers and companies, can be benefitted from the new technologies.

The majority of the largest shipping companies create partnerships with tech specialists, attempting to stay ahead of the game:

  • One of the last instances is MSC’s investigation in smart containers. The shipping giant made an agreement with TRAXENS in order to equip 50,000 containers with Internet-connected devices, which collect and communicate real-time data on container’s position and movements.
  • Before that, CMA CGM had already signed an agreement with TRAXENS in June. “Connected containers” is the goal of the collaboration.
  • Another mega deal was signed in August between Maersk and IBM. Two companies announced the creation of TradeLens to apply blockchain to world’s global supply chain.
  • PIL, also, announced its cooperation with IBM in October in another blockchain trial to design and create an electronic bill of lading. And the story goes on…

Market’s leaders are trying to follow the tech trend. No one wants to miss the digital train, as the opportunity seems bright.

Let’s keep in mind, however, that digitalization could cause some negative consequences, if we do not be careful. The steps must be gradual and safe. It’s preferable to make small and essential changes in order to be able to keep the market’s balance. Massive metamorphose could push the market in a strenuous condition.

Digitalization offers a great chance to upgrade the industry and skyrocket the quality of the market. The digital journey has just begun and the upcoming destinations seem fascinating.
