DNV and Seatrium join forces for innovation in marine sustainability

DNV will support Seatrium with expert guidance on market and regulatory trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in environmental, safety, and quality standards for the maritime and offshore industries under a signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Both organizations will collaborate to optimize processes and enhance efficiencies in new building, conversion, and retrofit projects. They will also explore partnerships with other organizations and institutes to advance technologies addressing key challenges in the marine and offshore sectors.

“This agreement with Seatrium marks an important step in building marine and offshore solutions for a more sustainable and resilient future. By combining our innovation and execution strengths into the decarbonization and digitalization space, we are well-positioned to deliver transformative solutions that can address challenges and opportunities across key industries,” commented Remi Eriksen, Group President and CEO of DNV.

According to a statement, the partnership will leverage the combined expertise of DNV and Seatrium to drive technological and digital innovation in the marine and offshore industries. Focus areas include floating offshore wind turbines, platforms for hydrogen and ammonia production, and next-generation Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) units. The collaboration will also incorporate DNV’s proficiency in advanced cybersecurity and digital solutions into Seatrium’s suite of digital services.

During the signing ceremony, DNV awarded Seatrium two Approval in Principle (AiP) certificates for innovative floating offshore wind turbine designs: the FWSS (Floating Wind Semi-Submersible) and SWACH (Small Waterplane Area Cylindrical Hull). The FWSS design features a floating column foundation optimized for 15MW wind turbines, prioritizing efficient fabrication and cost-effectiveness.

Meanwhile, the SWACH design offers a cylindrical floating foundation for 15MW turbines, engineered for ease of fabrication and handling. These designs, certified under DNV’s updated DNV-RU-OU-0512 offshore rules for floating wind installations, address the growing floating offshore wind market and contribute to advancing the energy transition.

“We are excited to strengthen our long-standing collaboration with Seatrium to drive sustainable advancements in the marine and offshore sectors. Enhancing process efficiencies and harnessing digitalization are key enablers of the energy transition. By working together with Seatrium we can help the industry meet the rapidly evolving environmental, technological and regulatory challenges in its journey towards a decarbonized future,” said Cristina Saenz de Santa Maria, Regional Manager South East Asia, Pacific & India of Maritime division at DNV.
