DP World enhances Antwerp Gateway with new container equipment

The Finnish port equipment manufacturer Kalmar has received a large order for nine Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers from its long-term client DP World.

The new machines will be installed at the Antwerp Gateway terminal of DP World in Belgium with delivery being expected in the fourth quarter of 2023.

“We are proud to introduce our first hybrid straddle carrier with a continuous lifting capacity of 60 tons with no exceptions,” said Mikko Mononen, vice president of sales management of horizontal transportation at Kalmar.

The terminal is a joint venture between DP World Antwerp Holding, Cosco, Terminal Link and Duisport group with DP World currently operating a fleet of 58 Kalmar straddle carriers, of which 42 are hybrid models.

Furthermore, the new straddle carriers will have a lifting capability of 60 tons and are a new innovation from Kalmar aiming to increase terminal efficiency by enabling twin lifting of heavier container combinations.

The new equipment will be used to replace outdated equipment in Antwerp’s existing fleet. When compared to identical diesel-powered machinery, Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers may save up to 40% on fuel usage.

“With their excellent reliability and low fuel consumption, Kalmar hybrid straddle carriers will continue to play a key role in increasing productivity and optimising operational costs at the terminal,” commented Mark Brouns, head of the technical department of DP World Antwerp Gateway.

The order was booked in the Q1 order intake of Kalmar’s parent company, Cargotec.
