DP World, Goodyear collaborate on tree planting initiative

DP World has announced the successful planting of 702 trees as part of an ongoing initiative to reduce carbon emissions, in collaboration with the tyre manufacturing giant Goodyear.

The “Off the Road” project was launched in January 2023 to counteract CO2 emissions by planting two trees for every tyre purchased by DP World Southampton from Goodyear.

Over the past year, these trees have been planted in Wytham Woods, Oxfordshire, as part of a reforestation effort carried out in partnership with Tree-Nation, a non-profit organization dedicated to global reforestation and addressing climate change.

“Thanks to our strong working partnership with Goodyear, the tree planting initiative has made great progress so far. After cutting carbon emissions across Europe by 20 per cent last year, the ‘Off the Road’ initiative is yet another example of DP World’s commitment to work alongside partners that share our focus on sustainable operations as we strive to become carbon neutral by 2040 and net zero carbon by 2050,” stated Jonathan Scott, senior director – Engineering at DP World Southampton.

To date, this initiative has offset 121.4 tonnes of CO2, covering a total reforested area of 3,500 m². Various tree species, including Aspen, Scots Pine, and Grey Willow, have been planted throughout the year as part of this endeavour.

“We are happy to partner with DP World in this meaningful initiative, contributing to environmental sustainability while advancing our shared commitment to a better future. This collaboration exemplifies our dedication to working with our partners on fostering a culture of responsibility and care for the planet,” said Paul Bould, OTR sales manager UK, Ireland & Benelux at Goodyear.

In January, DP World Southampton revealed an enhancement to the “Modal Shift Programme”, offering increased financial incentives. This programme has the potential to reduce up to 4,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions by encouraging customers to transition freight from road to rail transport. Additionally, DP World London Gateway recently achieved a “fossil-diesel-free” status by switching operations to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

In a recent development, DP World received a Bronze Medal in its inaugural EcoVadis sustainability assessment for its global operations. EcoVadis, a major sustainability assessment provider, was awarded the medal in recognition of DP World’s successful implementation of its sustainability strategy, titled ‘Our World, Our Future’. This strategy is centred on creating a positive impact on individuals and communities.
