The German port Duisburger Hafen AG, also known as Duisport, recorded an important uptrend in container handling during the first half of the year, in comparison to 2020.
The total box volumes reached 2.2 million TEU during the first six months of the year, representing a growth of 10% over the same period of 2020.
In addition, the combined transportation saw a tonnage growth of 11%, with the shipping volumes increasing by 5%, while the rail segment presented a rise of 14% in comparison to the same period of the last year.
According to duisport, this growth was caused by the increased rail traffic with China, Poland and southern Europe, the expansion of existing routes and the launch of services with new destinations.
“A new container terminal will go into operation at logport VI at the end of this year, which will further increase the handling capacities in Duisburg,” said the port’s CEO Erich Staake, who also noted that “At this time, the handling of containers, swap bodies, and trailers already accounts for over 60% of the total handling volume at the Port of Duisburg.”
In the meantime, the total handling volumes of the port in the first half of 2021 were 29.5 million tonnes, which is slightly above the previous year’s result (2020: 29.2 million tonnes).
