Dutch shipping sector gets eco-investment boost

The Dutch shipbuilding sector is currently receiving a boost of US$275 million. Institutional investors and the province of Groningen has offered this financing to Dutch SME entrepreneurs who build or modernise short sea ships.

State Secretary Mona Keijzer (Economic Affairs and Climate) gave a starting guarantee on 27 January 2020 for this so-called Nesec Shipping Debt Fund (NSDF). The guarantee is part of the SME Action Supplementary Action Plan.

Many shipowners are struggling with outdated ships, which do not always meet the latest emission requirements. The Nesec Shipping Debt Fund focuses specifically on the purchase of new or existing short sea vessels, or the adjustments to these vessels. For example, to meet new requirements in the field of ballast water, to limit sulphur and other emissions.

Between 2012 and 2017, Dutch shipbuilders built 112 short sea vessels. The forty shipping companies that are active in this area now get extra access to credit to build modern ships or modernise existing ships. This benefits employment and the economy in the Northern Netherlands, and keeps the maritime sector strong throughout the Netherlands.
