EDP to invest in green hydrogen project for Pecém Industrial Complex

EDP Group has announced its cooperation with the Government of Ceará state to invest US$8 million in a pilot project for the production of a green hydrogen plant in Pecém Industrial and Port Complex, which is estimated to start in December 2022, with a production capacity of 250 Nm3/h of the gas.

The energy company EDP which is already operational in the Industrial Area of Pecém Complex in the northeast of Brasil with a 720 MW power plant, will have a solar plant of 3 MW providing renewable energy to an electrolyser from Hytron-NEA.

The project “Green Hydrogen HUB Pecém – Ceará” was launched in February by the Government of Ceará, Pecém Industrial and Port Complex (CIPP S/A), Federation of State Industries (Fiec) and Federal University of Ceará (UFC).

“EDP has been operating in Pecém Complex since 2012 and in the last five years alone, the company has handled 8.6 million tons of cargo with us,” said Danilo Serpa, CEO of Pecém Complex, who added, “This is a pioneering investment in Brasil and in the world with a strong sustainable impact since few places on the planet currently have H2 plants.”

According to a statement, the project has attracted companies’ interest in operating in the Green Hydrogen value chain, which ranges from renewable energy generation to production, storage, distribution and consumption of green hydrogen, including for export.
