Elbe widening eases Hamburg traffic flow

Hamburg Port Authority (HPA) and the German government have completed the joint dredging operations in the Elbe fairway for construction of a passing box.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The Elbe fairway has been widened to 385m along an 8km stretch between Wedel and Blankenese. From now on, seagoing ships with a combined width of 104m, instead of the former 90m, will be able to safely pass each other.

The passing box will enable the approach to the Port of Hamburg to be less dependent on tidal ebb and flow. Additionally, pending the final completion of fairway adjustment on the Lower and Outer Elbe, some works connected with the deepening remain to be performed. These include removal of obstacles, profiling, soundings, and nature conservation measures, which will also be made by HPA and the Federal Shipping and Waterways Administration of the German government.

“The widening of the passing box will make the Elbe still more attractive for international shipping. Additional ship width means time gained and easier planning. This will ensure simpler and more effective traffic flows,” said Hans-Heinrich Witte, president of the Federal Shipping and Waterways Administration.
