In January, Enaex, a prominent Chilean ammonium nitrate producer, and NYK Bulk & Projects Carriers (NBP), a member of the NYK Group, inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly research the feasibility of supplying low-carbon ammonia to ships powered by ammonia.
NBP plans to construct 10 to 15 ammonia-fueled Handymax bulkers in the late 2020s and beyond, primarily for transporting copper products from Chile to the Far East on behalf of Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile (CODELCO), a leading global copper producer.
Furthermore, Enaex and NBP intend to collaborate in the future to establish mechanisms for supplying low-carbon ammonia to these vessels at the Mejillones ammonia terminal located in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile.
The MoU was inked at Enaex’s headquarters in Santiago, Chile, in the presence of Juan Andrés Errázuriz Domínguez, CEO of Enaex, Hitoshi Nagasawa, chairman of NYK, and Masashi Suda, president of NBP.
